A shocking investigation has revealed that companies linked to high-ranking government officials, including the son of former Chief of Staff Frema Osei-Opare and the brother of former Minister John-Peter Amewu, have been granted mining concessions near ravaged riverbanks, despite a ban by former President Akufo-Addo.
The Fourth Estate’s investigation found that these companies, including Cape North Limited and Tera Nayo Limited, lack necessary permits from regulatory authorities, such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Water Resources Commission. Yet, they have carried out destructive mining activities, severely affecting the Tano and Ankobra rivers.

Regulatory Lapses
The investigation revealed that the Minerals Commission has granted mining leases to these companies, despite their lack of necessary permits. The EPA’s Mining Director, Mr. Sandow Ali, emphasized that companies need an EPA permit at any stage of exploration.
Environmental Devastation
Satellite imagery shows extensive damage to riverbanks and water bodies, highlighting the devastating impact of mining activities. The Ankobra River, in particular, has been severely affected, with mining concessions overlapping the river.
Government Criticized
A Rocha Ghana, an environmental conservation organization, has criticized the government for issuing mining concessions that straddle water bodies, despite the ban. The Operations Director, Daryl Bosu, described the situation as “incomprehensible” and “disturbing.”
Calls for Action
The investigation has raised concerns about the lack of transparency and accountability in the mining sector. Environmental groups and local communities are calling for urgent action to address the devastating impact of mining activities on water bodies and the environment.
