Speaker Alban Bagbin Lifts Suspension of Four MPs

In a significant development within Ghana’s parliamentary proceedings, Speaker Alban Bagbin has officially lifted the suspension of four Members of Parliament (MPs). This decision comes as a response to concerns that their suspension was detrimental to the constituents they represent.

The suspension was lifted after Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin addressed the House, urging the Speaker to reinstate the suspended MPs. His request received support from Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga.

The MPs who were suspended include Rockson Nelson Dafeamakpor, Majority Chief Whip and MP for South Dayi; Frank Annor-Dompreh, Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri; Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, MP for Gushiegu; and Jerry Ahmed Shaib, MP for Weija-Gbawe.

The situation escalated due to procedural disagreements during the vetting process, leading Speaker Bagbin to suspend the four legislators. This move sparked controversy, with members from both parties expressing concerns over its effects on parliamentary operations.

Following appeals from Afenyo-Markin and Ayariga, the Speaker reconsidered his earlier decision and reinstated the MPs, highlighting the need for unity and continuity in parliamentary work, particularly during a crucial time for key ministerial nominations.

The suspension had resulted in a temporary walkout by the Minority, allowing the Majority to carry on with the vetting process, including the ongoing questioning of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, whose nomination had already faced extensive scrutiny.

Now that the suspension has been lifted, all four MPs are ready to return to their duties, and proceedings are expected to resume as normal. The Speaker’s action is seen as an attempt to restore order and ensure the effective functioning of legislative activities after the earlier disruptions.
