2 million youth unemployed, major security risk to country – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has declared that over two million Ghanaian youth are currently unemployed, a situation he describes as a major security risk to the country.

However, he emphasised that the government has implemented measures to address this pressing issue.

In his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, the President explained that this unemployment crisis has led many youth to flee the country, while those remaining were growing increasingly frustrated.

To combat the situation, he announced the establishment of the Ministry for Youth Development and Empowerment, which is tasked with implementing policies aimed at ensuring youth employment.

The President further stated that the Ministry would roll out initiatives to engage the youth in various sectors.

In a related development, President Mahama revealed that the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee has been assigned the responsibility of bringing all individuals responsible for the ghost names in the National Service Scheme to book.

He added that all officials who were in office during the period when millions were paid to ghost names have been declared wanted.

Looking ahead, the President stated that national service personnel would undergo short military training to instill discipline and resilience among the youth.
